Lollapalooza organizers today announced the Lollapalooza Arts Education Fund, a $2.2 million investment to support arts education for more than 100,000 students in Chicago Public Schools (CPS). The world-class music festival will partner with Chicago’s leading arts education institution Ingenuity to distribute funding for transformative arts programs to CPS schools with the least amount of arts access. “We have been a part of the Chicago community since 2005 and this investment allows us to expand our impact in a significant way,” said Charlie Walker, partner, C3 Presents, Lollapalooza promoter. “We know that the next generation of artists and musicians is growing up right here in Chicago schools, yet too many children have little or no access to arts education. The Lollapalooza Arts Education Fund aims to ensure that all Chicago Public School students have the opportunity to develop their creative talent,” he added. The $2.2 million commitment, to be distributed between 2021 and 2026, is intended to close the gap in arts education, and will partner with Ingenuity’s Creative Schools Fund which will administer and distribute the funds directly to schools. Support will be targeted to Chicago neighborhoods, where 105,000 predominantly Black, Latinx and low-income CPS students do not have access…Continue Reading

MAMMOTH WVH, the solo project of Wolfgang Van Halen, played its second-ever concert last night (Wednesday, July 28) at RocHaus in West Dundee, Illinois. Fan-filmed video footage of the band performing the song “Distance” at the show can be seen below. “Distance” is an open letter to Wolfgang’s father, legendary VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen, declaring “no matter what the distance is, I will be with you.” The official music video for the song was created from a collection of family home movies through the years and offers an inside look in to one of music’s most notable personalities. Chronicling the family through the years, the video ends with a touching voicemail left from Eddie to his son. Wolfgang took to his Twitter after the West Dundee gig to write: “…and that’s show number 2! It’s an unreal feeling to finally be able to tour IN GENERAL, let alone with this music, AND to get the amazing response we’ve gotten so far. Thanks so much for showing up! Y’all are amazing!” MAMMOTH WVH’s tour as the support act for GUNS N’ ROSES will kick off on July 31 at Hersheypark Stadium and conclude in early October with a two-night run…Continue Reading

Three more IRON MAIDEN titles will get the jigsaw puzzle treatment later this summer. On September 17, Zee Productions will release MAIDEN’s “Running Free”, “Sanctuary” and “Purgatory” singles as 500-piece jigsaws on its Rock Saws imprint. All 500-piece puzzles come in a vinyl-box-set-sized box, perfect to fit alongside a vinyl record collection. According to Toy News, Rock Saws was originally developed by Zee Productions’ own self-proclaimed metalhead Steve Beatty. “I want to make jigsaws that are for the music fan,” Beatty said. “Vinyl came back and I loved the idea of making great record sleeve art into jigsaws, maybe stick the record on and do together.” Beatty launched Rock Saws in 2019, promising to “revolutionize” and “breathe new life into” the puzzles scene by delivering artwork from some of the rock and heavy metal scene’s most iconic album covers. The mission started with the launch of puzzles featuring artwork from albums by SLAYER and IRON MAIDEN. …Continue Reading

NIGHTWISH played a special “secret” concert earlier tonight (Wednesday, July 28) in Oulu, Finland. The Finnish/British/Dutch symphonic metallers performed at Club Teatria disguised as a NIGHTWISH cover band called NEVSKI & THE PROSPECTS, although speculation about the group’s actual identity was strong enough to cause the event to sell out. NIGHTWISH played the Oulu show as a warm-up for its festival appearances in Finland this week: July 30 at Qstock and July 31 at Kuopiorock. The Oulu gig marked NIGHTWISH’s first fan-attended show in more than two a half years. It was also NIGHTWISH’s first proper concert with session bassist Jukka Koskinen’s (WINTERSUN), who stepped into the group as the replacement for longtime NIGHTWISH bassist/vocalist Marko “Marco” Hietala. Hietala announced his departure from the band in January, explaining in a statement that he hadn’t “been able to feel validated by this life for a quite a few years now.” Koskinen made his live debut with NIGHTWISH at the band’s two interactive experiences in late May. The shows reportedly drew 150,000 viewers, setting the record for the largest paid virtual concert in Finland’s history. Most of the viewers came from Europe and North America, but the performance was a truly global event,…Continue Reading

Metal Blade Records has announced the signing of A-Z. A-Z (pronounced “A through Z”) equals Ray Alder (FATES WARNING; vocals) and Mark Zonder (ex-FATES WARNING, WARLORD; drums), and also means “anything is possible” — and with this lineup of musicians, that is no exaggeration. This exciting new band reunites Alder with Zonder, and they’re joined by Philip Bynoe (WARLORD, STEVE VAI, NUNO BETTENCOURT) on bass, Joop Wolters (STEVE WALSH, SIMON PHILLIPS) on guitar, and Vivien Lalu (STEVE WALSH, JORDAN RUDESS) on keys. Zonder comments: “When we were looking for a deal, Metal Blade was number one on the list. First worked with Brian Slagel about 40 years with ‘Metal Massacre II’ and WARLORD. No question that they do a great job and we are very excited and proud to be back at MB.” Musically, A-Z is melodic and progressive, bringing to mind the classic FATES WARNING-era of albums like “Parallels” and “Pleasant Shade Of Grey”, while recalling the hooks of classic 1970s and 1980s hard rock artists. The band’s upcoming debut will be the first time Alder and Zonder have recorded together since 2004, and it will surely please both FATES WARNING and melodic hard rock fans alike. In the meantime,…Continue Reading
